This year, 2011, is a great time to visit San Antonio. The city is celebrating the 175th anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo. When clients ask for transportation options in San Antonio, travel agents may recommend the VIA transportation system. It is a great way to see the sights if travelers do not want to rent a car, or do not wish to deal with expensive parking, or crowds.

VIA offers parking lots at several locations that are free if you are using VIA transportation. The VIA terminal located by the Best Western on Chestnut Street, is easy to find, and about ten minutes from the Alamo and River Walk. The cost for each ride is $1.10. So if you get off and get back on the charge is another $1.10. The streetcars and buses run from early morning to around midnight, but changes depending on the route and the day of the week. Hotels and tourist destinations have brochures available that have route and time information.

Ten great attractions to take advantage of using the VIA system are:

  1. The Alamo
  2. El Mercado-Market Square
  3. Institute of Texas Cultures
  4. Rivercenter Mall
  5. St. Paul Square
  6. Tower of the Americas
  7. King William Historic District
  8. Convention Center
  9. Blue Stars Art Complex
  10. Southtown

VIA is a great option from renting a car to save money and stress from driving and looking for parking around town. The system is very well managed and a timely operation.
